Scotland-wide Road Traffic Accident Law Scotland (RTALS) LLP is expanding its Peebles office with a series of new appointments and promotions.

The move follows a record year for RTALS, which operates specialist services; Motorcycle Law Scotland, Cycle Law Scotland and Pedestrian Law Scotland.

Jodi Gordon has been promoted to Associate Solicitor. A further lawyer, Carrie Burrows, has joined RTALS from Thompsons Solicitors and the firm has recruited two trainees, Thomas Mitchell and Zara Jones, bringing staff numbers up to ten for the specialist legal practice.

The expanded team is needed to handle a caseload that has risen 45 percent in the past two years.

Forecasted damages recovered for clients this year are expected to be £4.5m, bringing the total in damages recovered to nearly £12m, since the firm was established in 2013.

Brenda Mitchell - Senior PartnerSenior partner, Brenda Mitchell, a personal injury lawyer of over 30 years’ standing, said that employing local people was high on the agenda.

She added:

“While RTALS has a Scotland-wide focus, I like working with people locally as it brings a very strong team spirit, which is vitally important to us as a business. We rely on each other and pull together and that sense of respect and commitment to common goals and values comes across to our clients.

“For that reason, I am delighted by the recent round of recruitment and promotions. Jodi has been with us for three years and has successfully handled numerous accident compensation claims. Carrie did her traineeship with us and has returned with an additional two years’ experience of road traffic related cases. Thomas and Zara have been working with us on a part-time basis as they completed their diplomas and I’m thrilled to have them now as official trainees.

“The firm is growing and with the expanded team we will maintain the high quality of service to our clients, for which we have become known.”

She added:

“As a firm, we also pride ourselves in our specialist knowledge, not only of personal injury law, which goes without saying but by representing vulnerable road users, motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians. The team are all personally - and for some, professionally - experienced in the world of two wheels.  This not only gives us a formidable advantage that challenges our rivals, but it enriches our relationships with our clients and makes us passionate about our discipline.”

As lawyers, we can only provide the best legal service possible thanks to the endeavours of our experienced support staff. Our team of Fiona, Andrew, Kerri and Ellie are all from Peebles or Innerleithen in the Tweed Valley.

Safer roads for cyclists

Data shows us that roads are actually getting safer to cycle on but perceptually it doesn't feel like that. More needs to be done by the criminal justice system to demonstrate that irresponsible or illegal driving behaviour is unacceptable.
