Helmets

There is no law in the UK requiring the compulsory wearing of a cycle helmet. Many motorists feel that cyclists should perhaps wear helmets as its likely to protect them in the event of a collision. That being said, cycle helmets are made predominantly from polystyrene and are designed to protect riders from collisions at up to 12mph. Accidents between cars and cyclists tend to derive much higher speeds in any case.

Rule 59 states, “You should wear a cycle helmet which conforms to current regulations, is the correct size and securely fastened”. However, the Highway Code is merely a guide and has no legal authority. The wearing of a helmet is a choice not a rule.
